Google’s Pixel 10 devices to use a yet-unannounced MediaTek modem
According to a new report, Google is testing its Pixel 10 A prototype with a MediaTek modem, the T900. Google’s recent Pixels are all equipped with Samsung Exynos modems because their Tensor SoC is actually a customized Samsung chipset.
But next year’s Tensor G5 will be designed entirely by Google and is expected to be manufactured by TSMC. Therefore, the company is likely to move to a different modem provider – you might have expected it to be Qualcomm, but apparently it will be MediaTek.
The MediaTek T900 modem hasn’t been released yet, so we don’t know anything about it. That means we can’t hazard a guess as to how good it will be, or how it will compare to Qualcomm’s latest and greatest.
Hopefully Google picks this up for more than just the fact that it’s potentially cheaper than Qualcomm – we’re assuming that based on countless rumors about flagship chipsets, with MediaTek always seeming to undercut the competition in terms of pricing. However, time will tell.
