Grammarly just made it easier to prove the sources of your text in Google Docs

In this age of mistrust, misinformation, and skepticism, you may be wondering how to showcase your sources in a Google Doc. Did you type it yourself, copy and paste from a browser source, copy and paste from an unknown source, or did it come from generative AI?

You may not think this is an important clarification, but if writing is an important part of your existence or life, you will definitely want to demonstrate your sources.

That’s where the new one is Grammar the function appears.

Authorship actively monitors the writing process

The new feature is called Authoring, and according to Grammarly, “Grammarly Authoring is a set of features that help users showcase their text sources in a Google Doc. When you enable authoring in Google Docs, it actively tracks your writing progress as you write. “

I checked out Grammarly Authorship and was impressed by its accuracy. For example, I used it with this document, which includes pasted text straight from the Grammarly site. The author found all the text originally typed, but marked the sentence I copied from the Grammarly site as added from the Grammarly site. PR release from Grammarly about authorship. Needless to say, I was impressed. Even in beta this feature was accurate.

This feature is currently in beta testing and works in Google Docs via Grammar for Chrome or Microsoft Edge. In other words, for this to work, you’ll need a Chromium-based browser. Grammarly authoring is available on all plans (Free, Premium, Pro, and Education) and is very easy to enable.

How to enable and use byline in Grammarly

You’ll need to enable this feature in Google Docs by clicking the little fingerprint icon in the bottom right corner of a new Google Doc (you must have the Grammarly plugin installed first) and then clicking “Track Writing Activity.” You will then need to allow Grammarly access to your clipboard so that the add-on can record the sources used in your document.

To get started, click “Track Your Writing Activity.”

Once you click the button, Authorship will begin tracking your document. At any time, you can click the same fingerprint icon and then click View Report to view statistics for your current document.

To view the report at any time, click View Report.

The report will tell you the percentage of what you typed, what was copied from a known source, and what was copied from an unknown source. I managed to confuse the authorship by inserting content from Opera Aria AI that was marked as unknown source. But given that it’s still in beta, this shouldn’t come as a surprise.

Also: I’m an expert on AI tools and these are the only two I pay for.

For those interested in acknowledging the sources used in Google Docs, grammatical attribution should be considered mandatory.

To start using authoring in Google Docs, other than installing the Grammarly browser extension, you don’t need to install anything else.
