Gurman: Apple continuing development on health features for AirPods

in the latest issue of Electrified communicationBloomberg’s Mark Gurman provides some updates on the development of health features for Apple’s AirPods. We’ve heard reports of this in the past, but this provides a little more insight.

According to the newsletter, Apple is developing various health features, including heart rate monitors, temperature sensors, and new sensors that can track “a range of physiological indicators.” Apple is currently mainly focused on developing heart rate sensors.

In internal testing, Apple noted that the Apple Watch provided more accurate heart rate information, but Gurman reported that the AirPods weren’t far behind. We don’t have details on the other health features, nor an exact timeline, but Gurman says we’ll see it rolled out “in the next few years.”

Apple is also developing cameras for AirPods. The project had previously been scrapped but was revived amid Apple’s sudden interest in developing products for the artificial intelligence era. Gurman pointed out that this is a priority project for the AI team and the AirPods team, but it is still several years away from implementation:

In fact, it’s now considered a top priority for teams within Apple’s artificial intelligence and AirPods hardware development teams. That said, I don’t expect this technology to hit the market for a few years – assuming it doesn’t get canceled again.
