Has the truth behind Black Myth Wukong’s absence from Xbox has finally been revealed? It’s complicated

One of the most bizarre stories of 2024 may have come to a strange conclusion, according to developer Game Science. Black Myth Wukongabsence of Xbox on the Chinese social network Weibo. It looks like rumors of technical limitations being the main reason for the game’s lack of an Xbox port may have some merit after all.

Yongar Feng-Ji, CEO of Game Science: posted the following on Weibo: “Although there were no big surprises, I still felt a little excited after receiving them all. Everyone’s combat power is so terrifying, but the only thing missing is the XBOX robe… It seems a little wrong (but it’s a generic 10G). memory, it’s really impossible to get it without several years of optimization experience.” This is a machine translation, so take this with a grain of salt, and it’s worth noting that the Xbox Series S has 10GB of storage. memory, which certainly means the console is the main obstacle for the Xbox version.

Let’s take a brief journey through the saga. Back in 2024, Black Myth Wukong has proven to be an incredibly popular action game for many, doing well on PlayStation and PC. However, since nothing is known about the Xbox version of the game, many were curious as to why the game missed out on one of the major consoles. There was no official word initially, although two main theories circulated: some kind of exclusive deal with PlayStation or the Xbox Series S was a roadblock for the development team.

The Black Myth Wukong pre-order FAQ page states: “PC and PS5 users will be able to enjoy the full game starting August 20, 2024. We are currently optimizing the Xbox Series X | S to ensure it meets our quality standards, so it won’t release at the same time as other platforms. We apologize for the delay and are committed to minimizing wait times for Xbox users. We will announce a release date as soon as it meets our quality standards.” This indicates that more work is being done on the Xbox version, but since the game came out in August and there is still no Xbox version, it seemed like that was proving difficult.

However, the real turning point in this theory was Microsoft’s statement to Forbes. In an article by Paul TassiA Microsoft spokesperson issued the following statement: “As we have said previously, we are excited to launch Black Myth Wukong on Xbox Series X|S and are working with Game Science to bring the game to our platforms. “We would prefer not to comment on deals our partners have made with other platform owners, but we can confirm that the delay is not due to limitations of the Xbox platform that have been reported to us.”

Tassie would also post on Twitter that a source told him that as of August 2024, Black Myth Wukong was not on Xbox due to an exclusivity agreement. IGN later confirmed this report with his own source.

However, other journalists would say otherwise. Take Jeff Grubb, who said on an August episode of the Game Mess podcast that he’s heard that. there was no “marketing deal” that led to exclusivityalthough he didn’t turn down any of the other collaborations that got PlayStation off to a long start.

So, there was a period when he-said, she-said, heard different things from different knowledgeable people in very believable voices, deepening the mystery. Fast forward to today, the CEO appears to have resolved the issues. Of course, Game Science won’t be the only developer to have problems with the Xbox Series S. Funcom’s Dune Awakening production director Scott Junior told us last year that creating a Series S port would be a ‘challenge’and the developers of Stalker stated that make the Series S port “impossible” although this statement was accompanied by an optimistic view of how any developer could eventually figure it out.

Now there are only a few questions left. Why did Microsoft explicitly state that the delay was not due to technical issues? Was this just a PR stunt, or given that credible journalists have confirmed that an exclusive deal did exist, was there any confusion or misunderstanding behind the scenes? The obvious question then is: when will Black Myth Wukong be coming to Xbox? Will this ever happen? This story, although largely over, may still have some twists and turns.
