HDMI Forum unveils HDMI 2.2 specification with Ultra96 cable and 96Gbps bandwidth

The HDMI Forum has announced the upcoming release of HDMI 2.2, a new version of the HDMI specification that aims to improve audiovisual technology for a wide range of applications. The updated standard, which will launch in the first half of 2025, will introduce advanced features designed to improve performance and compatibility between devices.

One of the key features of HDMI 2.2 is the support for 96 Gbps bandwidth provided by next-generation HDMI fixed-rate link (FRL) technology. This significant increase in throughput is designed to meet the needs of high-performance applications such as augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR), mixed reality (MR) and spatial reality displays. It also finds applications in professional and commercial applications including digital signage, medical imaging and machine vision.

The update also introduces a new HDMI Ultra96 cable that supports full 96 Gbps bandwidth and unlocks the full capabilities of HDMI 2.2. The cable is part of the HDMI Cable Certification Program, which requires testing and certification for each model. Certified cables will have an official certification label to assure consumers of their reliability.

To improve audio and video synchronization, especially in complex configurations involving devices such as AV receivers or soundbars, HDMI 2.2 includes the Latency Indication Protocol (LIP). This feature is expected to provide smoother playback and better coordination between audio and visual elements.

Chandley Harrell, president of the HDMI Forum, explained the motivation for the update: “This new specification supports the rapidly evolving environment for exciting new technologies and products coming to markets now and in the future.”

HDMI 2.2 also provides support for higher resolutions and refresh rates, providing an improved viewing experience for TV shows, movies and gaming applications. The update is designed to ensure compatibility with current and future technologies, providing end users with a reliable, quality experience across all devices.

The new specification will be available to all HDMI 2.x users, and the HDMI Forum plans to notify them of its release. Consumers can expect HDMI 2.2-enabled products to hit the market shortly thereafter.
