Helldivers 2’s first licensed crossover is also Killzone’s official debut on PC, sort of
After much ridicule, the evil tyrants of Arrowhead Games and their malicious puppets, the “democratic government” of Super-Earth, have announced the very first Helldivers 2 licensed crossover. In another empty show of solidarity and liberation, they teamed up with the disgusting fascists of Killzone, the old shooter series from Sony and Guerrilla Games.
Starting today, you’ll be able to buy Killzone’s despicable Stormtrooper weapons, armor, and cosmetics in the store. Helldivers Supermarket, and there is a proposal for an additional Killzone-themed reward based on the success of the so-called Galactic War, a xenocidal bloodbath presented as an exercise in bringing “freedom” to the preeminent socialist automatons, the innocent Tyranid wildlife. and Wellsian cosplayers from newly added faction Illuminate.
We here at Rock Paper Shotgun stand against the mindless aggression of Super Earth and Arrowhead, which is absolutely not a great satirical joke based on some Verhoeven movie or other. These capes, anyway. Find the image and additional information below.
If you haven’t played Killzone, it used to be Sony’s silver bullet in the battle with Halo, Gears and Call of Duty for control of shooters. It’s a natural choice for a licensing partner for Helldivers, as it’s a series about a pseudo-world war-style clash between intergalactic space empires, one of which was briefly ruled by Logan Roy.
I was crazy about Killzone 2, which came out in 2009 and was one of the first “big” games I ever reviewed. It became famous with the E3 2005 trailer, which featured pre-rendered footage similar to real-time gameplay. In practice, it turned out to be a pretty normal first-person shooter, with a thunderous, grimdark setting and a slightly confusing first-person cover system. Mainline sequels Killzone 3 and Shadowfall are prime examples of the law of diminishing returns, while spin-offs Mercenary and Liberation are respectable handheld shooters. All of them are exclusive to Sony consoles, so the Helldivers 2 crossover will, I think, be Killzone’s official debut on PC. Hmm, I should put that in the title.
Helldivers X Killzone goodies form a “new tier of special premium content” in the Superstore. There has been some criticism from the diving community regarding both the pricing and the sale of the main weapons as DLC. The second part of the crossover deal will take place on December 23, and then in Steam announcement blog about “an additional Killzone 2 reward for all Helldivers based on your performance in the Galactic War.”
There is an arrow any number of cross collaborations in mind for Helldivers 2. For some time they had been contemplating a system that would effectively allow individual Helldivers hallucinations of licensed worldswith card cosmetics invisible to their fellow non-customers. I’m not exactly excited to see Killzone’s militaristic trappings in action again, but one Killgadget I’d like to see implemented in Helldivers 2 is Killzone 2’s open-roof infantry dropships. Check them out in the aforementioned E3 2005 trailer below. Now imagine riding one of these to the surface of Windemaitharix Prime.
