Horizon Zero Dawn And Helldivers Movies Are Officially In Development

At CES 2025, Sony officially announced that feature film adaptations of Horizon Zero Dawn and Helldivers are currently in development. For Horizon, Sony Columbia Pictures will produce the film, which is set in a post-apocalyptic future where human civilization has reverted back to a primitive state after a cataclysmic robot uprising. With machines now the dominant life form, the main Horizon games focus on Aloy, her mysterious origins, and the future of humanity.

This is not the first time that Sony and Columbia Pictures have worked on a live-action video game project: the film company previously released an adaptation of the Naughty Dog game. Uncharted back in 2022. Uncharted, starring Tom Holland as Nathan Drake and Mark Wahlberg as his mustachioed mentor Victor Sullivan, was a modest success at the box office, earning $407 million worldwide. PlayStation Productions head Assad Qizilbash spoke briefly about the Horizon film at CES 2025, explaining that it is currently in early development.

What’s also interesting is that Horizon was originally slated to be a live-action Netflix series, but last year the project was reported to be not moving forward due to allegations of workplace misconduct against The Umbrella Academy showrunner Steve Blackman.

Sony’s other major film project, Helldivers, is based on games developed by Arrowhead. Helldivers 2 was released last year and became one of the biggest hits of 2024, and in case you missed it, the games are essentially a mix of Starship Troopers and Warhammer 40K. Set in the distant future, the game is heavily inspired by Paul Verhoeven’s Starship Troopers as it depicts overzealous soldiers fiercely defending Super-Earth and its planets from aliens while they try to spread their philosophy of “managed democracy” to the stars .

In addition, the developer Sucker Punch’s Ghost of Tsushima is getting an anime adaptation Based on the Legends co-op mode. Sony is partnering with anime distributor Crunchyroll and Demon Slayer studio Aniplex to bring the animated project to life. Feature film “Ghost of Tsushima” has also been in development for several years, with John Wick’s Chad Stahelski set to direct. There have been minimal updates on the project lately, but back in 2023, Stahelski mentioned that the script was completed.
