Amazon is releasing its Second generation Kindle Scribe This morning, I’ve been testing a review device for the past few days, comparing it to the original Scribe and the competing reMarkable 2, which I use regularly.

One of the new features is an artificial intelligence summary tool, so I wrote my review on Kindle Scribe and let the device generate a summary from eight pages of handwritten notes. The results are so good that I can safely post the AI-generated text below as an overview of my impressions, including pros, cons, and key takeaways.

This is unedited, forwarded to my email as text from the unit, so you can see how the text comes through (including punctuation errors and other quirks). I first summarized a total of eight pages of notes and then did a separate AI summary of the key points from a subset of my two pages of handwritten points.

Kindle Scribe Review: Pros and Cons

  • Enjoy the new Active Canvas feature that allows writing directly in the book flow and instantly viewing all notes in annotated notebook view
  • Summary functionality is a positive change that will impact the way users think about and connect notes
  • The battery life is amazing. After several days of heavy use, the battery can still remain above 70%
  • Compared with the 2022 Scribe, the basic appearance remains unchanged. Allow reuse of the same case
  • Kindle integration delivers a best-in-class ebook experience with easy book previews. Buy. and access word definitions
    shortcoming:
  • It’s hard to tell the difference between a new pen and an original pen. Has similar weight distribution and feel
  • Highlighter triggering inadvertently due to pen button location
  • Occasional lag and noticeable screen refresh when using the Lasso selection tool
  • Toolbar icon placement is not ideal
  • File management capabilities are limited compared to Remarkable devices
  • Unsatisfied with script font selection. Prefer a more traditional font

Overall, Kindle Scribe offers useful features and a great reading experience, but there are a few minor annoyances and limitations in file management that detract from the overall experience.

-Key points:
– Scribe has useful features. But there are some minor annoyances and limitations.
-Scribe’s integration with Kindle is a key differentiator.
– For reading and writing. A scribe is the best choice. But for taking notes. Remarkable may be a better choice.
– Scribe is $399 and comes with premium markers, including an eraser.
-2022 Scribe owners can receive software updates for live canvas and AI summary functionality.

This concludes the AI summary. This is a good overview of my thoughts. Through this process, I realized how artificial intelligence can fundamentally solve the problem of poor optical character recognition of strange handwriting. In comparison, the Kindle’s direct OCR translation of my notes was sometimes difficult to read.
