How to complete the “Detective Only” task

To complete the task, you need to complete three contracts and determine the correct type of ghost. All this must be done at 42 Edgefield Road. Any wrong guesses will cause you to fail the test and you will have to do it all over again. So make sure you have as many clues as possible before you guess.

Tips on how to complete the “Detective Only” mission

You will need to carefully analyze how the ghost behaves in order to determine the type and complete the task. This is quite tricky since you won’t have any official evidence with you, but you need to try a few things and see how the ghost reacts so you can rule out the wrong types.

Here are some of our tips.

Clear the room for ghost orbs.

This is the best way to tell if you’re dealing with a Mimic, as they usually fill the room with fake ghostly orbs. Also check to see if they often change their behavior while in the room. Luckily, this is also one of the easiest ghosts to catch.

Throwing salt on the floor

If you throw salt at the very beginning, you can keep an eye on whether the ghosts actually step on it. If after some time the salt is still intact, then you are most likely dealing with a Ghost. If all else fails, this method is usually reliable enough to identify it.

Watch the lights turn off

The mare is a ghost that loves the dark, so if you want to identify him, you can turn on your TVs and all the lights you can find. If it turns off when you turn it on, then you are most likely dealing with a Mare.

Temperature drop

There is one ghost in particular that thrives in colder rooms: Hantu. If a room is colder than others, not only will it move faster, but it will also turn off the breaker. If you can’t turn it back on, it’s a great hint that Hantu is nearby.

Movement from the room

If, even after waiting for some time, the ghost does not want to leave the room it is in and cannot make any changes to it, then most likely you are dealing with Goriot.

Light some candles

Keep a close eye on the candles and try to take a photo when you see them flickering, if it is labeled as a “ghost photo” but there is no clear object in it, then it is most likely a Phantom. Also, if after you light at least three candles and take out the crucifix, they all go out at the same time, you are probably dealing with Onryo.

Careful use of the Ouija board.

Since every time you use the Ouija board you trigger a cursed event, you may be better off saving the board only for those questions that are necessary for your investigation. For example, ask how old the ghost is and then wait in the room for a while. Now ask again and if the answer is different with increasing age, you are dealing with Thay. Another useful question is to ask where the ghost is located so you can immediately identify the room.

Watch the speed of the ghost

Watching the ghost’s speed is a great way to get extra clues to make sure you’ve identified the right type.

  • Because the speed of the ghosts Phasmophobia will increase as soon as they notice you; if they slow down instead, you may be dealing with deogen.
  • If instead the ghost suddenly increases its speed as soon as you are spotted, then you may be dealing with a Revenant.
  • Moroi changes speed depending on your sanity level. If you see that the ghost is faster, and your average sanity level is between five and zero, then it may be the one you are hunting.
  • Raiju will move faster when near electrical equipment such as televisions and computers.

Check your Sanity level for changes

If your sanity depletes quite quickly, this can be a useful clue to determine the type of ghost you’re dealing with.

  • A sudden loss of sanity, as well as a slamming door, can be a sign of Yurei.
  • A low percentage of sanity drained after a few chants can indicate the presence of a banshee, as they use this ability to drain your sanity fairly quickly.
  • A whisper picked up by a microphone and accompanied by a sudden drop in your sanity level is a sure sign of a Moroi curse.
  • If your decline in sanity is due to things being thrown and broken, you may be dealing with a poltergeist.
  • Slowly decreasing sanity while standing in a room can be a sign that there is a Shadow hanging around.
  • If you see a very rapid decrease in sanity after a ghost event, you may be dealing with an Oni, as they can drain you twice as fast as other creatures.
  • If you have full sanity and are being hunted, then it is 100% Demon, since it is the only ghost capable of this. Although they usually hunt with a lower sanity level (80-70%), this is a strong hint that it is a demon.
