How to use Sora, OpenAI’s new video generating tool
What is Sora?
Sora is a powerful AI video generation model that can create videos based on text prompts, animate images, or remix videos in new styles. OpenAI previews the model for the first time Februarybut today is the first time the company has released it for wider use.
What’s new in this version?
Sora’s core functionality – creating impressive videos with simple prompts – remains similar to what was previewed in February, but OpenAI is working to make the model faster and cheaper ahead of a wider release. There are some new features, two of which stand out.
One is called a storyboard. With it, you can create multiple AI-generated videos and then combine them together on the timeline, just like using a traditional video editor like Adobe Premiere Pro.
The second is a feed that acts as a creative gallery. OpenAI says users can post Sora-generated videos to sources, see the cues behind certain videos, tweak them, and generally get inspired.
How much can you do with it?
You can generate videos based on text prompts, change video styles and elements using a tool called Remix, and use Storyboard to combine multiple clips together. Sora also offers preset styles that you can apply to your films, such as moody film noir or cardboard and paper craft, giving it a stop-motion feel. You can also trim and loop the videos you’ve created.
Who can use it?
To use Sora to generate videos, you need to subscribe to one of OpenAI’s premium plans – ChatGPT Plus ($20 per month) or ChatGPT Pro ($200 per month). Both Subscription includes access to other OpenAI products as well as. Users using ChatGPT Plus can generate videos up to 5 seconds in resolution up to 720p. This plan allows you to create 50 videos per month.
Users who subscribe to ChatGPT Pro can generate longer, higher-resolution videos, with resolutions capped at 1080p and durations limited to 20 seconds. They can also let Sora generate up to five versions of a video at once based on a single prompt, allowing for faster review of options. Pro users are limited to 500 videos per month, but can also create unlimited “easy” videos, which are not generated immediately but queued up when site traffic is low.
Both subscription levels allow you to create videos in three aspect ratios: vertical, horizontal and square.
