iOS 18.2 adds two hidden tools for controlling your iPhone’s volume
iOS 18.2 brings many new features you can’t miss, such as Email redesignnew Image Playground Appand Genmon Temple. But there are two new tools hidden in the Settings app in iOS 18.2: You can add volume controls back to the iPhone’s Lock screen, and you can set a maximum volume limit.
#1: Lock the on-screen volume slider
In the past, controlling volume from the iPhone’s lock screen was as simple as using a dedicated slider during audio playback.
Apple removed the option in iOS 16, but now you can take it back Thanks to the new iOS 18.2 settings.
To return the volume slider to your iPhone’s Lock screen audio control, open the Settings app and follow these steps:
- Go to Accessibility
- Scroll down and click Audio & Video
- Turn on the “Always show volume control” setting
Now, the next time you play any type of audio on your iPhone, the Lock screen will provide a convenient, always-available slider to adjust the volume.
#2: Limit maximum volume
The next tool focuses on limiting the maximum volume produced by the iPhone’s built-in speakers.
Maybe you have a young child using an iPhone or iPad and need to limit the volume to a reasonable level. Or you find yourself accidentally playing music at work or other inconvenient places.
By going to Settings ⇾ Sound & Haptics, you’ll find a new “Volume Limit” screen under the “Built-in Speakers” heading.
This is how Apple describes the tool:
Set volume limits for audio played through your iPhone speakers, such as songs, movies, and other media. This restriction does not affect phone or FaceTime calls, emergency calls and reminders, ringtones, alarms, system sounds, or Find My sounds.
If you choose to limit the maximum volume on your iPhone, you can set a maximum limit ranging from 20% of the standard volume all the way up to 90%.
