iOS 18.2 can ghostwrite all your emails, essays, and more with Apple Intelligence
The first Apple Intelligence features in iOS 18.1 include a variety of Tools to help you write. But iOS 18.2, iPadOS 18.2, and macOS Sequoia 15.2 expand on these tools in two key ways, including a powerful upgrade that does all the writing work for you, completely free.
Compose text using ChatGPT with Apple Intelligence
In iOS 18.2, users can benefit from Apple’s new partnership with OpenAI in two ways:
Compose is a powerful addition to existing Apple Intelligence authoring tools, providing system-wide help for virtually any application you use.
Some Apple applications, such as Notes and Mail, have dedicated toolbar buttons for accessing writing tools. But even if you use different applications, you can find them in the copy/paste menu. Simply click anywhere in the text field to access the menu.
You’ll find Compose at the bottom of the writing tools panel. It enables ChatGPT to draft original text for you based on your instructions.
Previously, Apple’s writing tools could only rewrite, proofread or format existing text. But now thanks to ChatGPT integration, it can ghostwrite original text almost entirely from scratch.
Just click the “Compose” button, tell ChatGPT what you need, and it will start producing the original text to fulfill your request.
After ChatGPT provides a first draft, you can issue instructions to improve the draft, or request a complete rewrite. ChatGPT even provides suggestions for changes that can be made.
You can choose, Upgrade to ChatGPT Plus to get more advanced models, but this is completely unnecessary.
Whether you’re drafting an email, a text message, or even a paper, Apple Intelligence’s new writing tools work right where you need them.
Describe the rewrite changes you require
There’s another writing tool upgrade in iOS 18.2: the ability to “describe your changes” for custom AI rewrites.
In iOS 18.1, Apple Intelligence can perform a standard rewrite of your existing text to preserve your existing writing style. It can also be overridden to one of three preset styles:
- friendly
- professional
- concise
But if none of these options get the results you want, iOS 18.2 adds a helpful new option.
There is a “Describe your changes” box at the top of the writing tools panel, where you can enter specific instructions for the rewrite you want. Apple Intelligence then began making changes in the hope that it would work.
iOS 18.2 Writing an Upgrade: Summary
Apple’s initial set of writing tools in iOS 18.1 was great, but these 18.2 upgrades significantly expand AI’s usefulness. For many people, a blank screen with a blinking cursor is very intimidating, which makes writing tools a real asset. And I already had mixed experience with rewrites before, so the ability to describe specific changes was a solid upgrade.
Have you used the new writing tools in iOS 18.2? How well do they work for you? Let us know in the comments.
