iOS 18.2: Here’s How Mail Categories Work

In iOS 18.2, Apple added a category view to the Mail app, which is designed to organize incoming emails by type. Category not yet best response received from iPhone user, so we thought we’d check it out.

Mail categories divide your email inbox into sections: Main for your most important messages, Transactional for your orders and receipts, Promotions for deals and offers, and Updates for news, subscriptions, and social.

When you enable a mail category, your main inbox will be front and center, and you can then swipe to see other emails that belong to other categories. The idea is to hide unimportant emails like newsletters and offers but have all order receipts in one place or emails about sales in one section of your inbox with an extra benefits.

There’s also a useful feature that aggregates all emails from a single sender into one view, so you can see all your Amazon emails, or all the emails you’ve received from an airline, in one place. To get to this view, just click on any email from that sender and scroll up to see other messages.

The main inbox contains emails from other categories, a feature that might make sense for people with too many inboxes, but people with zero inboxes are unlikely to appreciate it.

If you don’t like the mail category, you can Switch back to list view By clicking on the three dots in the upper right corner of the Mail app, but if you do want to try out mail categories, there are a few tips worth noting.

To see all the emails in your inbox chronologically without swapping views, simply swipe left on the category bar to access the All Mail option.

It’s not uncommon for emails to be sent to the wrong category. If this happens, you can choose to categorize manually by clicking on the email, clicking on the three dots in the upper right corner of the display, and selecting the “Category sender” option. . However, if you’re in the main inbox, you’ll need to click “Reply” and then select the “Category sender” option.

When you click on a message from a sender, you can delete all emails from that sender by using the three dots in the upper right corner of the display and selecting the Delete All option.
