iOS 18.2 just added a faster way to message Siri and ChatGPT
iOS 18.2 brings a lot of changes, big and small. A smaller, less noticeable update is a faster way to send messages to Siri or ChatGPT. Here’s how it works.
Input Siri controls are new options for iPhone action buttons
Siri is experiencing gradual change. It starts with the new design in iOS 18.1 Select additional enhancementsthen continue in iOS 18.2 Chat GPT support Added.
One of the most recent additions is a convenient new messaging mode: Type Siri.
In iOS 18.1 and later, you can activate this mode by double-clicking the bar at the bottom of your iPhone or iPad’s display.
But in iOS 18.2, there’s a faster way thanks to new system controls.
Control Center in iOS 18.2 adds a noteworthy feature: the Type to Siri control.
But in my experience, the best place to use this control is on your iPhone’s action button.
By setting action buttons to a new type of Siri control, you can open messaging mode faster than ever and type Siri or ChatGPT requests with ease.
Just do the following:
- Open the Settings app
- Go to action button
- Select control options
- Then select “Type Siri” from the menu

If you don’t want to replace the existing action button behavior, there is another option.
Thanks to the versatility of iOS 18’s new control system, you can add “Type to Siri” to the lock screen, replacing the “Flashlight” or “Camera” buttons. This can be obtained from Wallpaper/lock screen editing mode.
You’ve long been able to enable typing mode through the iPhone’s accessibility settings, but enabling it created challenges for voice interaction.
Now that dedicated controls for Type to Siri exist, you can use the new feature not only through the built-in double-tap gesture, but also through the action button, lock screen, and of course, Control Center.
Pro Tip: Works best when used with Siri Keyboard text replacement. For example, you can set up text replacement to quickly enter the “Ask ChatGPT” prefix so that your request will be sent directly to OpenAI’s assistant.
