iOS 18.2 official rollout begins: here’s what’s new
Apple has now rolled out iOS 18.2, iPadOS 18.2, and macOS Sequoia 15.2 updates to users around the world, which includes several major updates. This includes an expansion of Apple’s Smart Suite, although again it’s limited to English-speaking countries.
Users will get the first set of AI image generation functions through Image Playground, Genmoji and Image Wand in Notes. iOS 18.2 is available for iPhone XS/XR and newer models, and the Apple Intelligence function is limited to iPhone 15 Pro and newer models.
Apple Intelligence is also expanding its available languages to include localized English support for Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, South Africa and the United Kingdom
With the update, iOS 18.2 users will get a new Image Playground app that allows you to create stylized AI images of people in your photos. You can combine images with pre-made prompts or describe what kind of images you want the AI to generate for you. Apple currently offers two styles: animation and illustration. Image Playground is also integrated into the Messages app.
Genmoji lets you create custom emojis based on text prompts directly from the emoji keyboard. Users on iOS 18.2 and 18.1 will be able to see your Genmoji as regular emojis in text, while users on earlier versions of iOS or Android will only see images.
Apple is also integrating ChatGPT into Siri, so you can get answers to your queries directly from OpenAI’s chatbot without even opening its app. ChatGPT integration also extends to iOS system-wide writing tools, allowing you to quickly draft emails and messages with a specific tone and tone. All ChatGPT features are available without logging into your ChatGPT account.
Visual Intelligence is a unique feature of the iPhone 16 series that allows you to search and identify objects around you by simply pressing and holding the camera control button.
Once triggered, visual intelligence can detect objects, summarize and copy text, translate between languages, and detect contextual information such as work hours, phone numbers, and email addresses. Visual Intelligence also integrates with Google and ChatGPT so users can continue searching on these platforms.
Other tweaks in iOS 18.2 include more Control Center toggles, category filters for the default Mail app, a redesigned video player within the Photos app, and system-wide volume limits. EU users can now delete system apps such as Camera, Photos, Messages, Safari and App Store.
