iOS 18.2’s new Mail app is nice, but I disabled one of its main features

In iOS 18.2, Apple introduced New mail app. It introduces mail sorting, a new coat of paint, contact photos/business logos for conversations, a new system for grouping emails, and more. All of this sounded great when it was unveiled at WWDC, but now that I’ve actually spent some time with it, I have some questions.

Mail classification

One of the best features of the New Mail app is categorization, which separates your emails into different categories such as primary, transactions, updates, and promotions.

This all sounds good in concept, as it will organize your inbox and the “Main” tab will contain all the important content. But in practice, a lot of things were categorized incorrectly, and I found myself swiping to the All Mail tab most of the time so I could see everything without having to deal with inaccurate sorting.

Yes, you can choose to re-categorize senders if you don’t like the sorting method Apple has chosen. However, I find it a bit tedious compared to simply turning off categories entirely.

How to disable it

Apple takes into account the fact that everyone may not necessarily like categorization and provides an easy way to disable it.

You can switch from category to list view by clicking the three dots in the upper right corner of your inbox. This provides an “all mail” experience while still retaining the profile picture and other design elements of the new mail app.

This setting is also done on an inbox-by-inbox basis, so if you want to categorize all your inboxes but have a list view of others, you can do that.

Luckily for me, Apple already offers priority notifications in the Mail app, which does a much better job of quickly highlighting important content, and I don’t feel like I might miss an email because of less-than-ideal sorting. mail. This feature has literally saved me several times. Obviously, this feature requires an Apple Intelligence-enabled device (iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 16, iPhone 16 Pro, iPad mini 7, M1 and later Mac/iPad), but it’s my preferred method for viewing important content.

Apple will also soon expand priority notifications to all devices that support Apple Intelligence in a future version of iOS 18, allowing you to track what matters most across all your different apps, not just email. However, this has not yet come.
