iPhone 18 Rumored to Feature Upgraded Camera Sensor From Samsung With Many Benefits
While the launch of the iPhone 17 series is over eight months away, there are already rumors of iPhone 18 models coming next year.
Taiwan supply chain publication DigiTimes reported today that Samsung is developing a new triple-layer stacked camera sensor designed for the iPhone 18. This advanced image sensor will make the iPhone 18 camera more responsive, as well as other benefits including reduced noise in photos, increased dynamic range, and more.
According to the report, the exact technology is called “PD-TR-Logic” and refers to a camera sensor with three layers of circuitry attached to it. A informant known as “Jukanlosreve” first revealed Samsung’s alleged plans for the sensor last week.
Sony has long been the exclusive supplier of image sensors for iPhone cameras, so Samsung’s entry into the fray would be significant.
In July 2024, Apple supply chain analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said he expected Samsung begins shipping 48-megapixel ultra-wide-angle cameras for Apple for iPhone as early as 2026, when iPhone 18 models are expected to launch. It is unclear whether the Samsung sensor will also be used for the Fusion cameras and/or telephoto lens on iPhone 18 models, and it is unclear whether the sensor will be limited to iPhone 18 Pro models.
With at least three sources reporting Samsung’s plans to become a supplier of iPhone camera sensors, this rumor appears to be well established. However, the release of iPhone 18 models is still more than a year and a half away, so plans may change.
