A Kickstarter campaign is promoting its PlayStation 5 cooling unit, which it says can solve overheating and rear I/O melting issues. The event As we write this, its goal is $89,000, with a stretch goal of $125,000. Cooling elements start at $39.
The add-on is called Arctic PS5 Cooler and is billed as the world’s first PS5 cooler powered by artificial intelligence. The device is a clip-on vent that hooks onto the rear exhaust sonyThe PS5 console has four or six active cooling fans. The device is powered by a single USB port and features a pass-through USB port, which doesn’t reduce the console’s port choices.
SCRY, the creator of the new Kickstarter, is offering three unique models, one for each PS5 version: the original PS5 (which SCRY calls the “fat” model), the PS5 slim, and the recently launched PS5 Pro. The PS5 Pro and Slim models are very similar, with a total of four fans, three on the top and one on the bottom. The PS5 “fat” version comes with six fans.
As highlighted multiple times on the Kickstarter campaign page, these three cooling add-ons are powered by “Smart Thermal AI,” which adjusts fan speed based on the PS5’s internal temperature. It’s unclear how, or if, this differs from how PC fan speeds have been controlled for decades. At 50 degrees Celsius, the fans are said to accelerate to maximum fan speed to keep the console as cool as possible.
SCRY says its new cooling element reduces temperatures by 30% compared to factory operation, from a maximum of 64 degrees Celsius to a maximum of 55 degrees Celsius. On-site thermal imaging showed that the temperature at the hottest spot on the rear of the PS5 case (the Ethernet port) dropped by 9 degrees Celsius.
The goal of these PS5 coolers is to prevent any overheating issues that may arise on Sony’s latest console. Last year, there were mixed reports about overheating issues in a number of games, such as final fantasy 16. In rare cases, reports suggest the PS5 may overheat, causing certain rear connectors to melt.
In addition to the PS5 cooler, SCRY also launched a 4th generation M.2 SSD with heatsink as part of its Kickstarter campaign.
The homepage once again shows a stretch goal of up to $125,000, a milestone that will be achieved with a free “vertical” universal PS5 stand. Stretch goals of $75,000 and $100,000 are also in place, but will reportedly be “announced upon unlocking.”
