LG’s new 6K monitor supports Thunderbolt 5! But it’s not an OLED
Tech companies are usually racing against each other to get the latest and greatest input and output ports into their devices in time for CES, but there weren’t many Thunderbolt 5 devices on display at CES 2025.
However, one company that has taken this step is LG, which showed off the LG UltraFine 6K Display with Thunderbolt 5 ports in Las Vegas this week. LG UltraFine 6K is an interesting choice to house the world’s most powerful consumer I/O device, capable of outputting to two 8K displays at 60Hz or a single 6K display at 120Hz.
Okay, yes, the UltraFine 6K does boast an attractive 32-inch bezel with ultra-narrow bezels and 6K resolution, but LG has made it a Nano IPS Black panel with a 98 percent DCI-P3 color gamut rather than OLED. This means its color accuracy isn’t as good, and its blacks won’t quite reach the gorgeous deep blacks gamers get from OLED panels—like LG’s own UltraGear GX9 series.
However, there may be a good reason why LG took this step. The LG UltraFine 6K is already being compared in looks to the Apple Pro Display XDR, and if it looks like a duck and sounds like a duck, then its lowered Nano IPS Black panel could very well make it a more budget-friendly duck for gamers. (The Apple Pro Display XDR costs a whopping $5,000!)
However, it is difficult to piece together this theory. It’s more likely that when we get more details about this mystery monitor – perhaps a 120Hz refresh rate? – his virtues will only increase.
However, the Thunderbolt 5 connection alone makes it a viable alternative to almost every monitor that doesn’t already have it, and it’s something every gamer can find useful.
