LG’s new Gram laptops include Arrow Lake, new AI features
LG has launched its Gram laptop line ahead of CES 2025, confirming Intel’s debut of the Arrow Lake platform in laptops and offering a portfolio of artificial intelligence software that can run locally or in the cloud.
LG has unveiled two versions of the LG Gram Pro (17Z90TR and 16Z90TS), as well as the LG Gram Pro 2-in-1. LG also added a new product to its lineup: the Gram Book, an entry-level lightweight computer with a 1080p display and a cheaper price. However, LG did not reveal how much it will cost, nor when these new devices will ship.
LG’s two new Gram Pros offer the choice of integrated graphics or discrete graphics. LG said in a press release that the 17Z90TR will offer Nvidia RTX 4050 as well as Intel’s Arrow Lake mobile processors. back Launched to mixed reviews on desktopArrow Lake should debut at CES 2025 in laptops from LG and others. However, so far, LG has not announced plans for Nvidia Blackwell chips, the GeForce 5000 GPUs expected to debut in desktops and laptops. Maybe the same goes for laptops.
However, not all LG laptops include Arrow Lake, although the company’s brief specifications don’t specify which ones. The rest will use Intel’s older “Lunar Lake” chips, which feature more powerful AI TOPS specs. (None of the new laptops use AMD or Qualcomm processors.)
Lunar Lake’s artificial intelligence capabilities will support two versions of what LG calls “LG Gram AI,” specifically “LG Gram Chat.” LG Gram chat On-Device runs natively on a PC without an internet connection to protect user privacy, using a small language model developed by LG as a fork of its own EXAONE LLM. (LG did not release details about the parameters of LG Gram Chat.) “Notable features include time travel, allowing users to quickly and easily revisit web pages, documents, video and audio files,” LG said.
LG Chat Cloud does require an internet connection. LG’s cloud model is built on one of the latest GPT models, GPT-4o, but requires an undisclosed subscription fee to use it. (The first year is free.) The service will provide “detailed and comprehensive responses” to users’ questions, and the advantage is that they can also connect with users’ calendar and email services. However, it sounds like you’ll have to give LG permission to integrate your Outlook or Gmail emails.
LG’s new Gram laptop: specs and features
Otherwise, LG’s new Grams don’t appear to be much different from other laptops at CES. In fact, they’re a bit heavy, with only the simpler Pro model weighing less than 2.73 pounds. Although this cheap new Book product has a 15.6-inch 1080p LCD display, it is quite heavy at 3.74 pounds and has a battery capacity of only 51Wh.
Fortunately, other Gram models come with premium displays, with both Gram Pro models sporting a whopping 2560×1600 display, and the Pro 2-in-1 offering an 1800p OLED option. The three Pro products offer memory and storage options of up to 32GB, and up to 2TB of storage.
All laptops support an upgraded version of “Gram Link”, which sounds like a branded version Intel’s Unison App For sharing content on Android phones and laptops.
Below is the spec list of the new LG Gram laptop. (Note that LG’s brand name refers to these laptops as “grams,” with a lowercase “G.”)
