The sellers are trying to capitalize on the Internet’s particular fascination with Mangione, whose good looks and privileged background have won him fans despite being accused of high-profile murders in broad daylight. Researchers say the fascination with Mangione is a worrying trend, suggesting that behavior once confined to the fringes of the web is becoming mainstream.
Most items are sold through print-on-demand websites, where anyone can design and sell a range of products. On a website called My Porch Prints, one seller offered a mug with a heart-shaped image of a shirtless Mangione with the words “I love my boyfriend” next to it. Many print-on-demand merchants are selling stylized versions of the gun-toting, green hoodie-wearing Luigi character from Nintendo’s Mario video game. Another hoodie, available in several online stores, is called Chill Guy and features Mangione surrounded by hearts.
Websites such as Nobele T-Shirt also sell a variety of different T-shirts and hoodies with the words “Free Luigi” printed on the design, while many other websites use the words “Deny, Defend, Depose”, Mangione is said to have engraved On some ammo.
Finally, custom gift shop ModParty is also selling a T-shirt online featuring the McDonald’s logo with the word Mangione superimposed on it, a reference to Mangione’s arrest at a fast-food restaurant in Altoona, Pennsylvania, where workers recognized him Later he was captured.
