MacBook Pros With OLED Displays Won’t Have a Notch, Roadmap Shows
According to people familiar with the matter, Apple plans to eliminate the bangs design on MacBook Pro in a few years. roadmap Shared by research firm Omdia.
The roadmap shows that the 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models released in 2026 will be equipped with a hole-punch lens on the top of the display instead of bangs. It’s unclear if there’s just a pinhole in the display, or if Apple will extend the iPhone’s Dynamic Island to the Mac to sound system alerts, such as low battery life alerts.
There will be more visible pixels on the notchless MacBook Pro display, which may slightly increase the available area for macOS menu columns. Eliminating the notch will also make the display look more seamless overall.
Previously rumored to be the first MacBook Pro model to feature an OLED display Will be released in 2026so Omdia’s roadmap confirms the timeframe shared by other sources. The move to OLED technology is expected to be part of the MacBook Pro’s first redesign since 2021, likely with a thinner design and other changes.
Compared with current MacBook Pro models equipped with mini-LED screens, the advantages of OLED technology include higher brightness, higher contrast and deeper blacks, improved power efficiency to extend battery life, and more. A switch to an OLED display may also help future MacBook Pro models adopt a thinner design.
There aren’t expected to be any major changes to the MacBook Pro in the meantime. As expected, next year’s models are expected to come with specs from the M5, M5 Pro and M5 Max chips, but no redesigns are expected before switching to OLED displays.
Meanwhile, according to Omdia, MacBook Air will continue to maintain its leadership position in 2028.
