macOS 15.2 Sequoia backup bug(s) affecting multiple apps

One or more backup errors macOS 15.2 Sequoia Is affecting Apple itself time machine utility and third-party applications SuperDuper and CarbonCopyCloner.

Initially, the issue seemed to only affect bootable backups, but it now appears that it is either more widespread than that or has multiple bugs affecting it apple Backup…

It started with SuperDuper

SuperDuper developer Shirt Pocket originally used its own code to create bootable backups of Mac volumes, before Apple locked it down so developers had to use the company’s own duplicator feature.

After SuperDuper bootable backup starts failing, The company investigated The bug was found to exist in Apple’s replicator code in macOS 15.2.

macOS 15.2 was released a few days ago, and it was a pleasant surprise. A terrible, terrible surprise. Apple breaks down replicants.

It seems that towards the end of copying a volume, when trying to copy a preboot or restore, it fails with a resource busy error. In the past, busy resource issues could be solved by ensuring that the system stayed awake. But this new bug means that, on most systems, there’s no way to fix it. It just failed.

Since Apple takes away the ability of third parties (like us) to copy the operating system and takes the responsibility themselves, it’s their responsibility to ensure this feature continues to work. At this point, they failed in macOS 15.2. Because it’s their code and we’re forced to rely on it to replicate the OS, OS replication won’t work until they fix it.

Synology said The same issue is affecting bootable backups of its NAS system.

Wider macOS 15 Sequoia backup errors

CarbonCopyCloner was also affected, it normally supported bootable backups again, but then users reported (non-bootable) Time Machine backups also failed.

MacOS 15.2 breaks Time Machine backups. A friend’s entire backup history was destroyed by a time machine.

This issue appears to be specific to Apple Silicon Macs.
