- Artificial intelligence is threatening the security and integrity of APIs
- Three-quarters are worried, but most are taking action now
- Businesses need to understand the entire threat landscape
As artificial intelligence technology becomes more widespread, more companies now face security threats exacerbated by artificial intelligence, new research says.
A Kong report found that a quarter of companies claim they have encountered AI-enhanced security threats, but as many as three-quarters say they will be seriously concerned about these threats in the future.
Additionally, while a majority (85%) say they are confident in their organization’s security capabilities, more than half (55%) have experienced an API security incident in the past year.
Artificial intelligence is exacerbating security threats
With prominence AI Security threats continue to increase, and so do the damage they cause. One in five said their organization had experienced an API security incident in the past year, resulting in more than $500,000 in losses.
About nine-in-ten (88%) say API security is now a top priority, and a similar number (92%) say they are taking steps to combat AI-enhanced attacks, but 84% say AI and legal science Master will make securing API more difficult.
Marco Palladino, chief technology officer at Kong, expressed optimism: “The report shows that API security is being taken seriously as part of an overall cybersecurity strategy, but there are still some blind spots that can expose organizations to threats.”
When it comes to future advances in artificial intelligence, Palladino said companies will likely continue to create vulnerabilities for themselves, so understanding the full threat landscape is critical to taking a comprehensive approach.
Many companies are already starting to see success from increased investment – nearly half (45%) allocate at least 20% of their cybersecurity budget to API security, including API monitoring and anomaly detection tools (63%), API gateway solutions (61%) API encryption and tokenization (58%) lead the way.
As enterprises face an increasing number of AI threats that expose APIs, it’s clear that we must prioritize API security before we lose control of the problem. Modern principles such as Zero Trust security will play an important role in the coming years.
