Marvel’s What If…? Finally Fixes Its Watcher Problem

Only two episodes left in Marvel’s animated anthology series What if…?, One of the most disgruntled employees in the multiverse has finally been reprimanded by his higher-ups. In the penultimate episode of the series, Uatu, better known as watchmanthree other Watchers—the Exalted, the Avatar, and the Executioner—visited him and responded to his multiverse transgressions.

in the latest episode What if…? Uatu guides us through an alternate reality where Kate Bishop (Hailee Steinfeld) and Shang-Chi (played by Liu Simu) is a group of cowboys who chase Hood (played by Zhang Menger) through the Wild West in search of his sister. On the way, they met Kui Junfan (played by Deng Ailun). When Toshin-beom tries to escape capture on top of a moving train, he’s on the verge of being thrown off the train until Utu intervenes, hinting that the young boy’s tragic end occurred in some other timeline, and knocks the bad guy to the ground. It’s classic superhero altruism, until you realize the only rule that makes a man an observer.

As an Observer, Utu vowed to observe but never interfere with the stories of the multiverse. Unfortunately for Uatu, he cared a little too much. The Season 1 finale was titled “What if…the Watchmen broke their oath?” He formed a team of superheroes called the Guardians of the Multiverse to destroy Ultron. Uatu decided to interfere because Ultron gained multiverse consciousness in the previous episode, broke through the barrier between Uatu and the multiverse, and started yelling.

In this season alone, he breaks his vow to save Junfan, and in the previous episode, he was willing Rarity Williams (Dominic Thorne) refuses to succumb to his tragic fate, watching Mysterio (Alejandro Sabo) fall victim to her again and again as he fights her. Although he made no substantial intervention, even a few words of encouragement were enough to make the other three observers tired of Uatu’s frequent infractions. In the latest episode, they stop playing the game and the adults pin Utu to his dimensional barrier after sternly telling him “We can no longer ignore your interference.”

It’s always interesting when we see the full power of the diverse gods. It’s a pity that there are only a few episodes left in the show What if…? series, we can only hope we get two episodes full of diverse chaos.
