Matt Reeves Hasn’t Closed the Door on His Batman Joining James Gunn’s DC Universe
When James Gunn and Peter Safran were given the keys to DC Studios, everything seemed so clear. Matt Reeves made his Batman movies, and they will live *there*, and Gunn and Safran will shepherd the new DC Batman, and he will live with them *here*. At least, that was the plan for 2023. Since then Reeves Batman continuation was pushed back twiceGunn and Safran moved on. shoot and throw multiple projects, and now the question is being raised—especially among fans—whether making two separate Batman films makes sense.
Today, Gunn is a fierce supporter of Reeves. enough to protect the delay 2027 Batman Part Two And bring Batman into it DC Universe, via Animated Commando creatures. But speaking at the Golden Globes this week, Reeves himself seemed to admit that his Batman, played by Robert Pattinson, could potentially become the Batman of the DC Universe.
“It really comes down to whether it makes sense,” Reeves said. reporter Josh Horowitz. “What was great was that I wanted to tell a story that we call an ‘Epic Crime Saga’ and all that stuff, which is the essence of what we want to do. And it was important for me to be able to realize this. And James and Peter did a great job of handling it and letting us do it. What will the future bring? I can’t tell you. I have no idea right now other than my head is down right now about getting Batman Part Two shooting and making it something really special, which is, of course, the most important thing.”
Whether this makes sense probably depends on two things: timing and history. Time for Reeves to shoot Batman Part Two later this year and will be released in October 2027. By then, there will be several DC films and TV series out, and Gunn and Safran will have to decide if they should just make their own Batman story (Brave and Boldpotentially directed by Andy Muschietti) or integrate Reeves.
But Reeves also makes it clear that he is allowed to do what he wants. And the Batman story he wants to tell may not fit Gunn and Safran’s canon or tone. This should also be taken into account. So, as Reeves implies here, it’s possible, but they’ll wait and see.
Speaking of waiting, Reeves also admitted that the delays to his film’s release weren’t ideal. “There’s a lot going on and it took longer than I would have liked,” he said. “But I’m also really excited about what we’re doing, so I can’t wait to share it with everyone.”
He also said that he hopes the main villain will be a surprise and that the film won’t be what most people expect. “This story is a continuation in one sense and completely different in another,” Reeves said. “[It] will show different sides of Rob. I think it will be very interesting.”
