MediaTek Dimensity 8400 now official with all big core CPU, a first for its segment

The Dimensity 9300 launched by MediaTek last year was the first Android SoC to use a full-core CPU configuration. This year’s Dimensity 9400 also uses this configuration, but they are both top-tier chipsets.

Dimensity 8400 is equipped with 8 Cortex-A725 CPU cores with a main frequency of up to 3.25 GHz. Note that while MediaTek hasn’t detailed the clock speeds of each core, this may only be achieved by one of the cores, not all of them.

Compared with Dimensity 8300, MediaTek claims that multi-core performance has been improved by 41%. The company also claims a 44% reduction in peak power consumption, a 100% increase in L2 cache, a 50% increase in L3 cache, and a 25% increase in SLC cache. This chip supports WQHD+ screens with refresh rates up to 144 Hz, LPDDR5X RAM and UFS 4.0 storage, Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.4.

This CPU is paired with Arm Mali-G720 MC7 GPU, which increases peak performance by 24% and reduces power consumption by 42%. You can also expect touch latency optimizations. The MediaTek NPU 880 in the Dimensity 8400 is 20% faster in integer/floating point operations (33% faster in large language model text generation), 18% more efficient, and 21% faster in Stable Diffusion 1.5 .

The SoC features an Imagiq 1080 ISP, supports a 320 MP sensor, in-sensor zoom with 100% PDAF, HDR video recording throughout the zoom range, and uses 12% less power in 4K HDR video capture. Finally, the new 5G-A modem has download performance of up to 5.17Gbps.
