Meta makes U-turn on bricked Meta Quest headsets after backlash

Unsurprisingly, customers were unimpressed with Meta killing their product, and then it seemed Expect them to buy new ones.

Like many others, when I tried to update on December 5th, my headset crashed and wouldn’t turn on. I contacted Meta support and after troubleshooting, they told me the headphones were broken and I needed to buy new ones.

This unit cost me £200. In the third quarter of 2024, Meta’s profits exceeded $15 billion. That’s less than $2,000 per second!

If 1,000 people’s devices were bricked under warranty, and assuming Meta’s device had a net value of $100, they could all replace it and it would only have a 50-second impact on the bottom line.

They spent more time (and therefore time/money) arguing and negotiating the support case than just wholesale equipment replacement and avoiding a PR train wreck in the process.

This is even more true when the issue affects a model that many people buy as Christmas gifts.

We have discovered a software update issue that causes some Quest 2/3/3S headsets to become unresponsive and fail to boot correctly. We’re actively working to resolve this issue for all users, but for the most part, you can now use your device normally.
