Meta test will bring eBay listings to Facebook Marketplace

Meta expands Facebook Marketplace to enable eBay listings. The test will launch in the US, France and Germany, allowing users to browse eBay listings on Marketplace. Sellers on eBay can list items as usual, and “as long as your account is in good standing, your listings may appear on any of these partners, including Facebook Marketplace, based on user interests, purchasing trends and listing quality,” eBay says. The company will continue to process all product inquiries and transactions.

Meta’s decision is an attempt to reassure the European Union, which fined the technology company 797.12 million euros ($821 million) in November last year. The European Commission accused Meta of violating antitrust rules because “Meta linked its online classifieds service Facebook Marketplace to its personal social network Facebook and imposed unfair trading conditions on other providers of online classified ads services,” Margrethe Vestager, then the European Commission’s executive vice-president in charge of competition policy, said at the time. This was done to benefit its own Facebook Marketplace service, thereby giving it benefits that other online classifieds service providers could not match.”

Meta’s decision to put eBay listings on Facebook Marketplace is far from an admission of guilt. “While we disagree with the European Commission’s decision on Facebook Marketplace and continue to appeal it, we are working quickly and constructively to create a solution that takes into account the issues raised,” This is stated in the Meta message..
