Microsoft issues critical .NET installer warning to developers

Microsoft is warning software developers to update their .NET installation links, citing “unexpected changes.”

The situation, which Microsoft describes as “critical,” comes after the bankruptcy of Edgio, the company responsible for hosting some .NET-related content delivery network (CDN) instances. Developers are being told to take immediate action to avoid problems.

Edgio has filed for bankruptcy, meaning it will cease operations. In an announcement issued shortly after Christmas, Microsoft said: “We are currently making unexpected changes to how .NET installers and files are distributed. This change may impact you and may require changes to your development, CI and/or production infrastructure. We do not anticipate that most users will be directly affected, however, it is important to verify that you are affected and be aware of downtime or other types of damage.”

The company went on to say that it is “critical to verify whether you are affected and to be aware of outages or other types of damage,” adding:

We maintain multiple Content Delivery Network (CDN) instances to deliver .NET versions. Some end up at azureedge.net. The domains are hosted by edg.io, which will soon cease operations due to bankruptcy. We need to migrate to a new CDN and will use new domains in the future.

The azureedge.net domain may experience short-term downtime. We expect these domains to be permanently retired in the first few months of 2025.

The two affected domains are dotnetcli.azureedge.net and dotnetbuilds.azureedge.net. Microsoft says it has taken various steps to reduce the impact of these changes and has more to come.
