New malware justifies Apple’s locked-down security strategy – Computerworld

This attack revealed that platforms can be undermined, and although Macs (and other Apple products) – unlike others – are safe by design, but this does not mean they are infallible.

The introduction of the lockdown demonstrates that Apple knows that attacks happen. In this context, it becomes extremely important to make sure that every user understands that if the software they usually pay for is available for free somewhere, they should absolutely avoid installing it. And they should always ensure that legitimate software (like Chrome) is installed from its original source.

Of course, this isn’t a problem as long as you stay in trusted app distribution ecosystems, especially Apple’s own app stores, which are tightly controlled. But as the company is forced to open itself up to third-party distribution, that security will be undermined because, at least in some cases, some app developers insist on independently distributing their software.
