Sony debuted some wild looking Star Trek-holodeck-like technology that, if it works as advertised, will allow people to step into the world The Last of Us and get up close and personal with the franchise’s grotesque spore zombies. This new technology will let you even, uh…smell them.

At CES 2025, which is taking place now, Sony showed as it’s called “Future Immersive Entertainment Concept”. The idea is to use a large number of high-quality TVs to create a room that people can walk into and be surrounded by different environments from movies and games.

Here’s a video from Sony demonstrating this technology and an experimental version of it using The Last of Us game assets.

The concept is similar to ILM’s Volume.– surround people with CG footage – but Sony’s concept is about interactivity and creating a more immersive effect, rather than creating a virtual set for a TV show or movie. This means that, according to Sony, a future version of this technology will allow people to truly smell the worlds they find themselves in. One day, you’ll be able to pay Sony $50 for the privilege of walking through a large room filled with 8K monitors and smelling the musty face and dirty clothes of a clicker. A truly amazing future.

Before you get too excited to smell The Last of Us or explore the world Ghostbusters using Sony’s Holodeck technology, keep in mind that actual production of this entire concept is still a long way off.

However, I can see a future where Sony combines a more advanced version of the video room idea with something like Disney Infinity Floor Create a hyper-realistic haunted house or digital target game featuring famous characters and weapons from PlayStation games.
