New Xbox Controller Is Basically A Fancy PS5 Gamepad
At CES 2025 manufacturer of accessories and controllers Hyperkin introduced its new controller for Xbox, inspired by Sony PS5 DualSense controller. However, this new wired controller is more than just an Xbox pad, aimed at people who prefer the layout and shape of the PlayStation controller.
Hyperkin’s controller, nicknamed Competitorwas first announced in 2019 before being officially introduced in 2020. But the controller manufacturer has since completely updated it. While the new design is still intended to make it an Xbox Series X/S controller for people who want the ergonomics of a DualSense gamepad, this time it looks more like the DualSense, with a separate D-pad and microphone mute button. and other PS5-style triggers and colors.
Here’s a nice trailer for the upcoming PlayStation-themed Xbox controller. IGN:
According to Hyperkin via Edgethis new controller will be wired only and will include Hall effect thumb sticks, this should mean that you won’t experience the dreaded effect of the stick blowing away just a few months after purchasing it. (This is a feature that the standard Xbox and PS5 controllers don’t have!) The upcoming controller also features two programmable back buttons. You’ll be able to use The Competitor on both Xbox consoles and your PC.
Hyperkin didn’t reveal the price, but I was expecting something in the $60 to $100 range. The controller company says its PS5-like Xbox controller will be available later this year.
Being able to use The Competitor on PC is nice, as many games still don’t have PS button icons when using a PlayStation controller. In theory it should behave like an Xbox controller when connected to Steam, but when in use it will feel like a PlayStation controller. Just don’t get confused about which X button to press when the QTE prompt appears!
