Nikon An innovative on-board camera system was developed in partnership with Mitsubishi Fuso Truck and Bus Company (MFTBC). The camera is equipped with an optical lens that captures both telephoto and wide-angle images, allowing users to see distant objects while checking their peripheral vision. The camera will be on display for the first time at the Consumer Electronics Show (International Consumer Electronics Show) takes place in Las Vegas from January 7-10, 2025.
The optical axis for distant shots and peripheral shots is the same, preventing parallax effects. When used as a vehicle-mounted camera, the AI system can perform image recognition to collect road information that needs to be tracked, such as road signs or other vehicles at a distance. The dual camera system reduces issues with losing object tracking or seeing ghost images.
When used as a vehicle-mounted camera, the integrated telephoto and wide-angle lens system means fewer cameras need to be installed in the vehicle while still providing seamless 360-degree coverage, reducing system costs and breakdown rates.
The camera can be integrated into advanced driver assistance systems and autonomous driving technology, helping to improve visibility and prevent serious accidents caused by drivers unable to see signs or pedestrians.
Since 2020, Nikon and MFTBC have been collaborating on a camera system originally intended for use on trucks and buses. Nikon said it is also exploring possibilities to expand the use of the technology, not just in vehicles but also in different fields.
