Nintendo downplays CES’ convincing Nintendo Switch 2 leak
Following CES 2025, where accessory maker Genki showed off a mock-up of the Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo is now denying recent leaks about its still-unrevealed console.
Gamers have been glued to almost every Nintendo Switch 2 rumor that has surfaced in recent weeks (and there have been many), but the latest is proposed console layout at CES 2025. Previously, Nintendo had remained silent about the leaks, but now the company has broken its silence and issued a statement.
In the report for CNET Japan affiliateNintendo states: “The gaming hardware that Genki claims at CES as Nintendo hardware is unofficial and was not provided to Nintendo.”
Genki has since backtracked a bit on its own leaks. The company now says its mockup was unofficial, telling the publication. Game*Spark that it was simply based on leaked information rather than an internal tip. This contrasts with other reports in which Genki allegedly stated that it had a Switch 2.
If the mockup of the accessory was based on existing leaks, then it doesn’t confirm anything; instead, he simply develops the idea of the console’s design as a marketing gimmick. On the other hand, it seems strange that accessory manufacturers would start producing something that hasn’t been confirmed. Genka’s model also matched other recent leaks, giving the fake device some credibility. There may be some truth to this story, even if it is based on rumors.
Nintendo has always kept its information secret, but we know something. The Nintendo Switch 2 (or whatever the console is called) will be backwards compatible with Switch games, and it should be announced before March 31st.
Nintendo promised official announcement of Switch 2 by the end of the financial year, but this means that the console will not be released during this period. The earliest we can expect this to happen is April 2025, although this is a very optimistic assumption.
