Notch has “basically announced” Minecraft 2
Markus “Notch” Persson “essentially announced” Minecraft 2.
In a New Year’s email, Persson invited his millions of followers to indicate which project they’d like him to focus on in 2025—a traditional roguelike mixed with a “tile-based first-person dungeon crawler” or a “spiritual dungeon crawler.” successor to Minecraft.
In a post asking for “honest and legal” […] feedback,” Persson briefly explained what his dungeon crawling would entail, but then admitted, “But then I start to think that maybe there are people who like my work but don’t share my taste for retro nostalgia and would rather I make a spiritual successor to Minecraft, and I mean, of course I’d take that money.”
At the time of writing, nearly a quarter of a million of his followers had voted, 78 percent of whom, perhaps unsurprisingly, were in favor of a new Minecraft game, even though he was asking people to “[please] voting potion. You can do this using zoomers, it’s actually very convenient.
“Something like Stardew Valleybut more kicks at the door diagonally,” Notch added.
A few days later, responding to commenters who had missed his initial post, Persson summed up what had happened by saying: “Basically, I announced Minecraft 2. I thought maybe people REALLY want me to make another game that’s a lot like first. and I enjoy working on games again.
“I don’t really care which game I make first (or even if I make more), but I know I’m making it, so I decided I was absolutely willing to give it a fair chance in the form of a spiritual successor to Minecraft and made a deal about it survey.
“I’m going to be open and honest about this by saying that spiritual successors are usually… you know… thrown out the window. Tragic,” he added. “What I’m afraid of is that my next game is going to happen anyway, and I try to avoid that. So why not do something that people REALLY want and are willing to give me even MORE money for.”
“I intend to get money [sic] well spent, but my God, I realized that I often fail. Victory will be a failure until you succeed.”
Persson added that he didn’t have a non-compete clause when selling Minecraft to Microsoft – “there was a year-long period where I couldn’t make a landscape-shifting game or anything like that, but I was in the Maldives the whole time.” , did not influence any creative decisions,” but admitted that using the Minecraft name “would be highly illegal.”
“Instead, I would make a new original game of the same type as Minecraft and call it something different,” he said. “They’re traditionally sometimes called ‘spiritual successors’, but they usually seem a little bland.
“But if people really wanted it, I would really like to make this game. That would be my Gremlins 2.”
Persson also said that being a “human [his] in short,” he intended to “do it in a way that doesn’t in any way try to subtly impinge on the incredible work the Mojang team does and what Microsoft does well at Microsoft.”
“And I respect them for that. This is their job. And they, as far as I understand, allow the studio to do everything their way, which seems very fair to me,” he added.
It’s been a busy time for Minecraft. Late last year the game finally received Native version of PlayStation 5announced that it would be stop supporting VR on PCand confirmed plans to open Minecraft theme parks in US and UK.
