Nvidia CEO teases plans for consumer CPU following Project Digits and GB10 CPU unveiling

Rumor Mill: Nvidia has unveiled a new personal supercomputer, sparking rumors that it is preparing to enter the consumer processor market. With its strong expertise in graphics and artificial intelligence technologies, Nvidia can bring innovation and increased competition to a market that has long been dominated by a few big players.

Nvidia sparked speculation about its entry into the consumer processor market with the unveiling of Project Digits at CES 2025. The $3,000 personal AI supercomputer features Grace Blackwell’s new GB10 super chip, a 20-core desktop processor co-developed with MediaTek.

Project figures Delivers an astonishing one petaflop of artificial intelligence computing power—roughly 1,000 times more than the average laptop. This level of performance, once only available to large data centers or specialized facilities, allows users to run AI models containing up to 200 billion parameters locally, eliminating the need to rely on cloud resources. Despite its power, the device is amazing compactcomparable in size to a brick.

However, Project Digits is not a mass market product. Running on a custom Linux system aimed specifically at AI developers, the $3,000 price positiones it as a dedicated tool for advanced AI development rather than a consumer-grade device.

The partnership with MediaTek for the GB10 superchip raised eyebrows as the collaboration on an Arm-based processor signals Nvidia’s serious intent to develop consumer-grade processors and compete in a market currently dominated by Intel, AMD and Qualcomm.

Rumors about Nvidia entering the consumer processor market have been circulating since October 2023, when reports emerged proposed that Nvidia and AMD are working on Arm-based chips scheduled for release in 2025.

NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang Speaking hinted at the new processor’s broader ambitions at an investor presentation. “You know, obviously we have plans,” Juan teased, declining to give specific details. He added that he would “wait to tell you” what those plans entail, fueling further speculation about Nvidia’s strategy.

Huang also hinted that MediaTek could bring the processor to market on its own, creating what he called “a big win-win situation.” This collaboration could significantly change the competitive processor market.

Nvidia’s moves come at a time of dramatic change in the PC processor market. Qualcomm has made significant progress with its Arm-based devices. Snapdragon X Elite processors that deliver performance and energy efficiency comparable to Apple’s MacBook. These advances have put pressure on traditional x86 systems from Intel and AMD. Additionally, Nvidia’s arrival coincides with the expiration of Qualcomm’s exclusivity agreements in the Arm-based PC sector, opening up opportunities for new competitors.

2024 was a turning point for Windows on handand the platform finally realized its potential. With Nvidia and other companies joining the fray, 2025 could be a turning point in the ongoing battle between x86 and Arm architectures.

Huang also talked about Nvidia’s plans to bridge the gap between Linux, the operating system of choice for artificial intelligence developers, and Microsoft Windows, which dominates the consumer market. The company intends to use Microsoft Windows Subsystem for Linux technology to create a product that will seamlessly support both platforms.

“We’re going to make this product mainstream,” Huang said, adding that Nvidia will support it with its pro-grade software offerings.
