ForbesTips and answers NYT “Connections” for Monday, January 13

Hey guys! I hope your week is off to a great start.

I’m starting 2025 by purchasing a few more home essentials… and a few non-essentials. I don’t have salt and pepper grinders (shameful, I know) and I hate my shower curtain, so I need to replace this feature.

Also on the short-term list of things to buy is a heated clothes rack. Otherwise, I don’t have much space to hang things to air dry, and most of the clothes I buy these days don’t need to be dried in the dryer, so I should probably have one of these.

I really need to buy a new sofa too, so I’ll start looking for a replacement soon. Sorry, credit card! (Just kidding, I’ll pay the bill in full as soon as I get my statement.)

Before we begin, I have created a discussion group for Connections and this column on Discord. You can talk about every game (and other topics) with me and other people. I’m always interested in hearing how other people approach the game, so join us! It’s fun.

It’s also the best way to give me feedback on a column, especially on those rare(!) occasions when I mess something up.

Today’s NOW Connections clues and answers for Tuesday, January 14th are coming soon.

How to play Connections

Connections it’s free, popular New York Times daily word game. Every day at midnight you receive a new puzzle. You can play on NOW website or the Games app.

You are presented with a grid of 16 words. Your task is to unite them into four groups of four, finding out the connections between them. Groups can represent things like clickable objects, names of study participants, or words preceded by a body part.

There is only one solution for each puzzle, and you need to be careful when dealing with words that may belong to more than one category. You can shuffle the words around to perhaps see connections between them.

Each group is color coded. The yellow group is usually the easiest to understand, the blue and green are in the middle, and the purple group is usually the hardest. The purple group often involves puns.

Select four words that you think go together and click “Submit.” If you make a guess and are wrong, you will lose a life. If you’re close to getting the group right, you might see a message saying you’re one word away from the correct solution, but you’ll still need to figure out which one to swap.

If you make four mistakes, the game is over. Let’s make sure this doesn’t happen with some tips, and if you’re really struggling, today’s Connections answers. As is the case with Wardle and other similar games, you can easily share the results with your friends on social networks and group chats.

If you have NOW A “Full Access” or “Games” subscription allows you to access the publication. Connections archive. This includes all previous games Connectionsso you can go back and play any of the ones you missed.

Beyond the first 60 games or so, you’ll be able to find my tips for each grid via Google if you need them! Only Click here and add the date of the game for which you need hints or answers to your search query.

Two perfect games in a row is a great way to start a new streak. Here’s how things are going for me:

🟩🟩🟩🟩

I didn’t quite know where to start. My first suspicion was that SWANK would have something to do with actress Hilary and not Chic, since he was next to FLASH in the grid.

When I looked at FUNCTIONAL, I realized the color yellow. Using a slightly smaller grid, I looked at each word more carefully, realizing that there was probably some kind of pun involved in SWANK, and there was nothing else in GULLY that really made sense. Voila, the purple colors are sorted.

After this, I realized that the camera pieces were included in the grid, and the greens (for which I defined the connection) were left for perfect back-to-back games.

PS I mentioned Eurovision in yesterday’s recommendation, so I guess I should mention my favorite song from the event. As soon as I heard Lordi’s “Hard Rock Hallelujah” I was sure she was going to win. To this day, I’m angry that I didn’t bet on the outcome because the song had such a big chance. And on the evening when Lordi won Eurovision, I danced to this song in a rock club. It was a fun evening:

Have a good day! Be sure to drink enough water! Call the one you love!
