Brief summary
Onkyo is returning to the hi-fi business with three new Icon Series amplifiers in 2025.
UK prices have not been announced, but US models range from $1,499 to $1,999.
Onkyo is one of the most respected brands in hi-fi, but in recent years it has focused on AV receivers rather than the amplifiers that helped build that reputation.
However, in 2025 the brand returned to the hi-fi business and introduced three new amplifiers and preamps for discerning listeners.
The all-new Icon Series includes three models: the P-80 Network Preamplifier, the M-80 Power Amplifier, and the A-50 Streaming Amplifier. All three models have a clean, minimalist design, and the M-80 also has some pretty attractive backlit volume meters on the front panel.
Minimalism is Onkyo’s signature. One of the reasons its amps remain popular in the aftermarket is because the brand focused on sound and solid build quality rather than cramming its products with gimmicks, bells and whistles. The new Icon series seems to keep that focus while adding features you actually need.
Onkyo Icon Series: Key Features and Prices
The P-80 features the new AK4452 stereo DAC and Onkyo DIDRC technology, which reduces high-frequency noise in the DAC filter and phono stage.
It has HDMI ARC, Dirac Live Room correction, and is also Roon Ready. You can stream via Wi-Fi or Bluetooth, and there’s support for AirPlay 2 and Chromecast.
P-80 works with Spotify Connect, TIDAL Connect, Qobuz Connect, Amazon Music, TuneIn and QQ Music. The phono stage is designed for both MM and MC inputs.
Next, the M-80 power amplifier delivers 200W into 4 ohms or 150W into 8 ohms and features a balanced Class AB amplifier, again with DIDRC distortion reduction circuitry. Like the P-80, it has a fanless design for quiet operation and features an extruded aluminum heatsink that Onkyo says reduces vibration.
The third badge is the A-50 Network Streaming Amplifier, which has the same streaming features, DIDRC noise reduction, and fanless heatsink design as the P-80. This is a Class AB amplifier, delivering 180W into 4 ohms or 140W into 8 ohms, and again, it’s Dirac Live Room Correction and Roon Ready certified.
All three models will be available in the fourth quarter of 2025, but pricing has only been announced in the US for now. The P-80 and M-80 cost $1,999 (about £1,605 / AU$3,209), while the A-50 costs $1,499 (about £1,200 / AU$2,405).
