OnePlus 13 and 13R get 4 years of major Android updates

Durability is becoming a key issue for Android smartphones these days, with Google Pixel and Samsung Galaxy devices offering industry-leading 7 years of support. With the new OnePlus 13 and 13R, OnePlus is also upping its software update commitment, but not to the same level.

OnePlus has been behind on long-term software support for a while now, and it seems to actively dislike the recent trend of lengthening support timelines. At the beginning of 2024, OnePlus President Kinder Liu stated: that supporting the device for 7 years is “totally missing the point” by arguing that experience is more important.

Since the launch of OnePlus 11OnePlus flagship devices come with 4 years of major Android updates and 5 years of security patches. With the latest generation, OnePlus is accelerating that schedule by adding another year of security updates.

OnePlus explains:

OnePlus 13 and OnePlus 13R will have 4 years of Android OS updates and 6 years
security updates. Both OnePlus 13 and OnePlus 13R will come with our latest OxygenOS 15 software update, which was made available to OnePlus users in November 2024.

So while the OnePlus 13 and OnePlus 13R will be protected for another year longer than their predecessors, they will still lose out on major updates 3 years earlier than comparable Google Pixel or Samsung Galaxy devices.

It’s also worth noting that OnePlus doesn’t release security patches on a consistent monthly schedule, but usually releases updates every two months.
