“It took us a while before we were able to pin it down to a firewall issue. This was not one of the obvious reasons to look at,” said Strachan Stine Smemo, Bane’s external communications manager, in an email Computer world. “It was difficult to find the problem.”

Bain’s team chose not to change any firewall settings and instead – as a temporary measure – switched communications to a different firewall. (They later changed the affected components, Smemo said.)

Arild Nybrodahl, Bain’s director of information and communications technology, said his team discovered the “system instability” on Christmas Eve when “troubleshooting efforts were undertaken.” According to him, the situation is not bad enough to stop work until 8 a.m. the next day.
