Qualcomm is off the hook for now, wins its licensing dispute with ARM

A U.S. federal court sided with Qualcomm in the trial against ARM, saying the licensing agreement between the two companies had not been violated, although the situation remains uncertain. But at least now, Qualcomm is off the hook.

two companies mired in controversy After Qualcomm acquired Nuvia, a new startup that also uses ARM architecture. ARM said Qualcomm should pay higher patent fees because Nuvia is part of Qualcomm and they all use ARM’s chip design patents.

Although the judge ruled in favor of Qualcomm, she said it was not a clear victory because the jury could not reach a unanimous decision on whether Nuvia violated its licensing agreement with ARM. This opens up the possibility for ARM to pursue another case in the future.
