ShiftCam calls the Planck “the world’s smallest portable SSD,” and it’s certainly very small. This, coupled with the unusual placement of the USB-C connector, allows the drive to fit neatly on the bottom of the iPhone Pro and store up to 2TB of high-definition ProRes video while recording.

The accessory will soon hit the market and will be demonstrated at CES 2025 This week.

ShiftCam Planck: SSD designed for iPhone

Any of the iPhone 15/16 Pro models can record high-resolution ProRes videobut only if the data is transferred directly to the external drive. Connecting a traditional SSD to a phone for this job can be difficult, hence the ShiftCam Planck’s innovative design with a USB-C connector in the middle of one side rather than the typical short edge.

“Our mission with Planck is to remove the barriers of traditional storage and empower creators to focus on their craft,” said Benson Chiu, CEO of Planck. ShiftCam. “We’ve designed a tool so portable and powerful that it becomes an invisible but essential part of any creator’s workflow.”

To enable 4K video recording at 120fps, the SSD provides data transfer rates of up to 1050MB/s.

Although ShiftCam Planck is designed for iPhone 15/16 Pro or Pro Max, it can be used with almost any computer with a USB-C port, including Poppies and the majority iPad models.

ShiftCam promises the product is durable: “It’s drop-resistant, IP65 waterproof, and durable enough to travel wherever your creative mind takes it.”

Coming soon to the market

The ShiftCam Planck will launch on Kickstarter in early February, priced at $125 for the 1TB variant and $199 for the 2TB variant. Following this crowdfunding campaign, the SSD should become widely available in the spring of 2025. Retail prices will be $189 for 1 TB and $299 for 2 TB.

SanDisk came up with a similar idea. His Solid State Drive for Creator Phone Magnetically attaches to the back of iPhone while recording ProRes video. The product also premiered at CES 2025, which took place all week in Las Vegas.
