Release 0.4 // Progress Report

For the past two weeks or so I’ve been developing the game from the previous article on Connect 4 for the litecanvas game engine.

So far I’ve been able to make changes to the drawing board,

I noticed that there were some samples and a repository showcasing different games made using the engine, and I decided to take on the task of building a game for the repository. If I successfully complete the first game in a short time, it will be possible for me to create more games and also test the repository, since I have told the maintainer Luiz that I can also help and he confirms this no problem.

For this version I chose LiteCanvas because I chose “Contribute to a project or community that has special meaning to you.”

This past summer I really enjoyed using PyGame to make games for my portfolio and learning how to use it as I went along. So far my game can only be run as an executable when downloading the game from itchioand I had no success getting them to run in the browser. I’ve made a quad game in the past, but that was using Python and PyGame, which I felt more comfortable with. Using LiteCanvas, I can have a small prototype of my game in the browser this time, and even help promote LiteCanvas to others by publishing my game (my game is not monetized). Even if I try to convert my code, JavaScript is different to me and presents me with many challenges. I think this is a problem that I really enjoy working on and debugging to make sure user input and animations are executed correctly. This makes sense to me because having my game showcased in the game engine’s official repository is very cool to me.

My goals for this release are as follows.


main goal

  • Use the LiteCanvas engine to create successful back-to-back games.
  • Study the LiteCanvas documentation and use cases to understand how the engine works.
  • It has the function of dropping the chip into place through the falling animation.
  • Simple yet user-friendly setup using simple resources.
  • Make the game a 2-player back-and-forth game.


Extra goals (if the game ends early)

  • Provides testing of the functionality of the game engine itself.
  • Implementing an AI opponent for the backgammon game, similar to my PyGame, but not as big.
  • Might create a new game and draft some ideas beforehand.
  • If I think of more, create more of these additional goals along the way.
