Report: Every iPhone model will be able to update to iOS 19, but some iPads left behind

thanks a Usually reliable tips from iPhoneSoftwe may already know the device compatibility of Apple’s next major operating system update coming next year.

The report claims that every iPhone model that currently supports iOS 18 will also support iOS 19, although as in previous years, some features may be limited to newer phones. Still, this means support for older iPhones like the iPhone XS and XR, first released in 2018, continues for another year.

However, some iPad models will stop updating to iPadOS 19.

A10-powered iPads (7th generation, released in 2019) apparently cannot be updated to iPadOS 19. Otherwise, all other iPad users can breathe a sigh of relief as it appears they will be getting a full year of free iPad software updates with new features.

iOS 19 and iPadOS 19 are expected to begin previewing among developers in June 2025 and be released to the public around September 2025.

It’s unclear what features iOS 19 will include. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman has said that long-term work on iOS 18 features has iOS 19 schedule delayed. iOS 19 may also be a smaller update in terms of major new features, iPhoneSoft said.

There is also the issue of continuous updates of Apple intelligence. If many new features in the new operating system require Apple Intelligence, the deadline for effective supported hardware will be much later.

It seems a little premature to be thinking about iOS 19 when several of the high-profile features promised by iOS 18 have yet to be released or even appear in the developer beta channel. These include artificial intelligence features such as priority notifications on the lock screen, app intent-driven in-app actions, personal contextual understanding, and screen awareness for Siri.
