Samsung Galaxy A16 gets 6 major Android updates for $199

Samsung kicked off the new year by launching the budget-oriented Galaxy A16 in the US, a phone that offers the most Android updates per dollar compared to anything else on the market.

The Galaxy A16 isn’t a particularly flashy device. It has a 90Hz 6.7-inch AMOLED display and is powered by an Exynos 1330 – a swap from MediaTek’s chip For use in other regions. There is also a 5,000 mAh battery under the hood that supports 25W fast charging. It seems that the main bottleneck comes from RAM allocation, which is only 4GB. But there is 128GB storage space and microSD expansion.

Apart from the internals, Samsung has equipped the Galaxy A16 with a 50MP rear lens, paired with a 5MP ultra-wide-angle camera and a 2MP macro camera. There is also a 13MP selfie camera.

Samsung’s latest budget device also has an IP54 rating, which means it can handle splashing water, something you won’t find in devices under $200.

The biggest value proposition, though, is the software update policy. Samsung provides a full 6 years of Android updates and security patches for the Galaxy A16. Specifically, the company says users can expect “6 generations of One UI and Android operating system upgrades, as well as 6 years of security updates.” With the device launching on Android 14 (One UI 6), that’s technically Meaning it’s a bit behind the times, but it’s still a huge deal for such a low-cost device.

Galaxy A16 will be available in black and blue in the US starting January 9 From Samsung website and other retailers/operators.
