Sonic 3 has an incredible Robotnik dance, because Jim Carrey insisted
one of the best moments Sonic the Hedgehog 3 Jim Carrey stars as two robot doctors – Ivo and his grandfather Gerald – merrily dancing around a classic Hollywood trope: the laser safety grid. Not only is this sequence technically difficult to achieve, Sonic 3 Director Jeff Fowler told Polygon that it was a scene proposed by Carey herself — and it certainly sounds like something Jim Carrey would do.
“In our early conversations, that was one of Jim’s requests,” Fowler recalled. “In the first [Sonic the Hedgehog movie]for a moment, Robotnik is in his lab and thinks it’s just him. he put on some music [“Where Evil Grows” by the Poppy Family] He started dancing. He had a little dance party and then he was interrupted [his assistant] stones. So Jim wanted to dance again. Of course, we couldn’t just make him dance, we had to go bigger and work really hard.
“We immediately brought in these incredible choreographers and dance crews,” Fowler said. “Of course, Jim wanted to do everything he could, but he couldn’t do everything, especially because he was dancing with himself. So there always had to be another person there dancing with him, and then he would be Facial replacements.
Fowler said it was a challenge to make the two-robot dance scene work because dozens of laser beams bounced off their laser suits. “We learned very quickly that the more we put into it, the harder it was to understand their movements,” Fowler said. “So it’s a very trial-and-error process of how much laser it takes to create these very interesting contours and geometric patterns using the way the laser reflects off the body.”
