Sonic 3’s Shadow Build-a-Bear Is A Scalper’s Dream
When I entered Workshop “Make a Bear” last month and they were completely sold out of their Shadow the Hedgehog bears so you could stuff them and dress them up to your liking, I don’t think I expected this to be the harbinger of an invasion of scalpers taking advantage Sonic the Hedgehog community. But it turns out that’s exactly what it was, and I was very lucky that I came across a store that gave me a demo version of the doll that they had on their shelf so I wouldn’t get stuck in reseller purgatory. listing Ultimate Lifeform on sites like eBay for hundreds of dollars.
View search results for Shadow the Hedgehog’s Build-a-Bear Teddy Bear. on eBay The more you scroll, the more absurd it gets. The asking price for the Ultimate Lifeform stuffed animal ranges from $370 to a whopping $800. To put that into perspective, it’s bigger than the PlayStation 5 Pro. Will these fancy hedgehogs sell for that price? I certainly hope not, but Shadow fans are getting desperate and the scalpers know it because Build-a-Bear is open about how much demand there is for the plushies and that it has no plans to restock them in future.
Right now you can open the Build-a-Bear website and search Sonic the Hedgehog 3 collectionand Shadow and most of his related accessories are no longer sold in the eShop. Sonic and Tails are still available, but the only evidence that Shadow was ever on the list is his 4-in-1 phrase sound chip. You can still find it at your local store, but be sure to call ahead if you don’t want to waste your time. Some stores have been told they won’t be restocking Shadow at all, although fans are confident. reporting that some Build-a-Bear employees told them the website might be restocked before other stores do, while others give out their location. it will be back in store this month.
In the meantime, those who managed to get the Build-a-Bear Shadow at the stated price are counting on their lucky stars and cashing in on the poor souls who didn’t find it in time. Others find ways to cope and resist the temptation to join the scalping machine. Others are still gritting their teeth, and if you are one of them, I hope you paid less than $300.
While it sucks for fans in the short term, let’s hope this crazy interest along with hype around Sonic the Hedgehog 3 And Shadow generations, tells Sega that our boy should remain the center of attention moving forward after making him a brooding caricature almost 20 years.
