Sony is making a Helldivers 2 movie even though it’s basically just Starship Troopers

Sony’s mission to create adaptations of every popular PlayStation exclusive console is moving forward quickly, as the company announced yesterday at the Consumer Electronics Show (KES), that he plans to make films based on both Helldivers 2 and Horizon Zero Dawn. The company has confirmed that the films are in development, although nothing is known at this time about the expected release date or actors involved.

“Looking ahead to what could be next, I’m pleased to announce that we are working with Sony Pictures to develop a film adaptation of our amazingly popular PlayStation game Helldivers 2,” PlayStation Productions head Asad Qizilbash said on stage during Sony CES 2025 Conference. Horizon Zero Dawn was announced soon after, with Sony calling the franchise “one of our most exciting IPs yet, with tremendous potential to expand into new categories and genres.” Interestingly, one of these cases with Horizon, well, expanding your horizons appeared last November when Guerilla Games and Studio Gobo released a family-friendly action adventure in the open world series called LEGO Horizon Adventure.

Once published, both films will join the big screen PlayStation adaptations already in development by Sony and its lead film subsidiary Columbia Pictures. These include 2022’s Uncharted and 2023’s Grand Turismo, both of which were successful; there is also the film “Before Dawn”, which is scheduled to premiere on April 25 this year, as well as a live-action film Ghost of Tsushima the film is on the way. For television, Sony has produced the wildly popular shows The Last of Us and Twisted Metal, and is also working on the God of War series with Amazon and the Ghost of Tsushima anime with Crunchyroll.

I wasn’t shocked by the announcement of Horizon Zero Dawn, as the cinematic journey of tribal warrior Aloy and her mission to hunt ravenous machine animals in the post-apocalypse always seemed like a natural fit for the big screen. What did However, I was surprised by the news about the adaptation of Helldivers 2. The series of sci-fi cooperative shooters from Arrowhead Game Studios has only recently gained enormous popularity among users. explosive release of the sequel last yearand its new real-time, player-driven story isn’t the kind that can simply be copied and pasted into a movie.
