Sony reaches 20 billion image sensors sold, doubles shipments in five years

Sony Semiconductor Manufacturing Co., which produces image sensors for smartphone cameras, announced that it has shipped 20 billion image sensors since it began producing transistors in the 1980s.

President Yoshihiro Yamaguchi told Nikkei Asia that mobile devices are the main reason for this huge number, which doubled from 1 billion to 20 billion in just five years from 2019 to 2024.

The acceleration in shipments is also due to the increase in the number of cameras in smartphones. We started seeing dual-lens smartphones in 2016 and 2017, and now quad-lens devices are common across all price segments.

The executive revealed that the semiconductor division operates three factories in Kumamoto, Nagasaki and Oita. While the Nagasaki and Oita plants focus on developing ISPs for mobile devices, the entire business also aspires to provide sensors for in-vehicle equipment, smart factories, smart ICT cameras, laser equipment and data centers.
